Note from Coach!!

AFA Boxing Alumni,

Welcome back! Classes started August 7th and I was delighted to welcome aboard new assistant coach Lt. Blake Baldi. Blake is a grad of the class of 2005 and brings a wing open championship and national championship at 147 lbs to the program. In short, he has not stopped smiling since his arrival and neither have I. Blake is replacing Erwin Vargas who now resides in Sin City Las Vegas with his new bride Courtney.

The month of August was spent getting adjusted to classes and getting back in shape from a long summer. We had sporadic workouts but turned up the heat after Parent’s Weekend in September and the team has started to take shape and come around. Intramurals started September 6th and with the teams formulated we began competitions on the 17th. The first big test of the season comes October 3rd when we host Navy in the Cadet Gym Upper Boxing Room with a 430 PM start time. There are 11 bouts slated, featuring 2 defending National Champions from Navy and 1 from Air Force. A special highlight will be the new TRANSCOM commander, General Duncan McNabb attending the matches as a special guest of the Falcon boxing program. General McNabb was class of 1974 and 2 time Wing Open champ in 1971 and 1974.

The following Friday the 10th of October will be the start of Friday Night Fights and the formation of the champion and challengers board. The next major event will be in Detroit on October 24th when the Flacons will square off with Army and Navy at the Detroit Athletic Club. The Flacons will turn immediately around and head to Army to box the Black Knights on October 31st. The fall season will culminate with the NCBA Invitational in New York City November 24th at the New York Athletic Club. You can see our entire schedule on the AF sports website at www.goairforcefalcons.com.

I am always excited and proud to welcome back the various classes during their homecoming reunions. This past weekend, I enjoyed the class of 1978 and 1973. It is amazing how 30 and 35 years respectively, can change a person. Visiting with former Wing Open champions like Leon Peck, Vince Wisniewski, and John Blecher was a highlight. Looking forward to seeing and visiting with all upon your return to USAFA. Please keep in touch.

On a personal note, I will be traveling to Las Vegas to attend the AFA vs. UNLV football game on October 18th. AFA Boxing alumnus Clay Vertrees will again host his traditional outstanding tailgate for all Falcon fans in attendance. If interested, please contact Coach Baldi at blake.baldi@usafa.edu.

A reminder that Sheri and I relocated in July of 2007, our new address 1405 Seasons Grove, Colorado Springs, CO 80907. Work Ph: 719-333-2766. Cell Ph: 719-660-5868

National Championship Results

Notes from Coach Weichers

1. AFA took 9 boxers to the national tournament April 10-12, 2008. The event was hosted at the new Reno Ballroom with CBS Sports TV on board providing a tape delay of the action. Look for the event to air in your area soon. Heading out of the west regional qualifier AFA was looking good with nine individual champs and two runner ups. The following week the Falcons Boyce Loomis 185lbs was diagnosed with mono and was unable to participate. 175lb Lucas Gagliardi was not allowed to compete for medical reasons. The Falcons boxed hard and did extremely well; I was very proud of the effort and desire to win. The team was focused, unified and we were physically peaking at the correct time.

2. In the quarterfinal round of competition AFA went 2 wins and 3 losses.
Daryn Nelson AFA 156 win vs Russ Williams Maryland
Chris Johnson AFA 195 win vs Andrew Snow West Virginia
Harvey White AFA 125 lost to Rou Ligon Mansfield

Runner up finishes.
Dean Chuva AFA 112 win vs Mikoto Yoshida Navy
Jesse Horton AFA 119 lost to Matt Longo Army
Daryn Nelson AFA 156 lost to Ryan Kotey Nevada

American status was Dean Chuva. Earning silver medal All-
American status was Jesse Horton and Daryn Nelson.
earning bronze medal All-American status was Brian Navin,
Chris Johnson. Corey Tintzman. Harvey White and Cliff Moore
also earned All-American status by winning the West Regional
Championship.

6. The final team standings:
Army----1
Navy----2
Nevada-3
AFA------4

7. Boxer of the week for Air Force was Dean Chuva who defeated
Navy’s Yoshida in the finals to revenge a loss last October.

8. Congratulations to the black knights of Army. The Falcons will
conclude the season with the post season banquet on Saturday,
10 May at 330pm in the football stadium press box. Please note this date your calendars. A detailed flyer will follow.

9. A special thanks to all the alumni and volunteer officials who
support our program all season. We also say farewell to coach
Erwin Vargas who is separating from the Air Force and moving
to Las Vegas to be with his new bride Courtney. Coach Vargas
has been on board since November of 2005. He will be replaced
by Blake bald class of 2005.Good luck and God Bless Coach

The Air Force Academy Boxing Team competed in the west regional qualifier on 27, 28 and 29 March at Santa Clara University California. The Falcons performed superbly qualifying all 11 members of the team for the National Tournament. The Falcons won 9 regional titles and 2 runner-ups en route to capturing its 28th regional team championship. The University of Nevada Reno, UNLV, San Jose State, University of San Francisco, Cal Berkeley, and host Santa Clara University rounded out the competition in the west. The young and talented Academy team showed their heart and conditioning as they took the fight to their opponents. The high altitude (7,258 ft) training was obvious as the Falcons were able to bring six minutes of pressure and effective aggression. 156 lb Regional Champion Daryn Nelson was awarded the boxer of the tournament by the officials for the higher weight classes. Nelson received a bye in the quarter finals, defeated a game and gritty Santa Clara opponent in the semi-finals, and unseeded the defending national champion from the University of Nevada Reno, Ryan Kotey. Nelson used effective combinations and brought a determination and will to win to the ring. The Air Force Academy 112 lb regional champion, Dean Chuva, showed tremendous heart and courage having to come from behind to win a close 3-2 decision over the talented and experienced Jason Morris of UNLV. Morris controlled round 1 and bloodied Chuva’s nose early in round 2 which warranted a mandatory 8-count from the referee. This seemed to motivate Chuva who immediately upped the tempo and pace to take charge in the second part of round 2. Chuva continued his relentless attack issuing 2 standing 8-counts and had Morris pinned on the ropes when the final bell rang. Chuva’s effort kick started his fellow teammates and provided the motivation and momentum throughout the final matches. The Falcons are in action at the NCBA National Competition next week on 10, 11, and 12 April at Reno Nevada. Thanks for all your help and support.

In Your Corner,

Coach

The last session of Friday Night Bouts concluded with 14 matches.

The Wing Open hopefuls will turn their attention to competitions in Seattle, 26 January and Reno on 1 February.

With three weeks remaining until the preliminary round of the Wing Open tournament the pressure mounts as everyone is looking over their shoulder to see where the competition will be.

Conditioning and quality ring work will be the key to success leading up to the tournament. Several divisions are loaded with talent and potential.

Congratulations to C3C Bailey Ball who was named boxer of the week. Bailey used a strong inside attack to take Sean May out of his fight. Ball’s strong combinations and quick hands were the difference in the scoring. Several positions changed on the champions and challengers board as the hungry underdogs imposed their will to earn the decision.

Mark your calendars---the 14th of February Wing Open Quarter finals, 20th of February Wing open Semi-Finals, and March 2nd the Wing Open Finals at 2 PM in Clune Arena. The Finals will be aired by the Mountain network and admission is free to the public.

Please join us for the 50th anniversary of this outstanding event. Thanks to all volunteer coaches and officials for helping us out tonight. We will see you in three weeks.

V/R,

Coach
